Best Options for Sash Windows
1. Retractable Top‑Mounted Screens
A cassette fixed at the top of the upper sash. When you slide the window open, you pull the screen down to cover the opening. When closed, the screen rolls up into the cassette – completely hidden. This is the most elegant solution and works on single‑ and double‑hung sashes.
2. Fixed Half‑Screens (Lower Sash Only)
Many period homes only open the lower sash. A lightweight frame screen screwed onto the interior of the lower sash allows you to still slide the window. This is cheaper than a retractable system but the screen is always visible.
3. Adhesive Velcro Screens
For rented period flats, adhesive velcro screens are a good no‑drill option. Stick tape to the inner frame and press the mesh on. However, they may interfere with the sash cord if the gap is tight. Works best on windows with a deep recess.
