Melbourne’s famous “four seasons in one day” climate means you want windows open for fresh air – but not for mosquitoes. From Victorian terraces in Fitzroy to modern apartments in Southbank, this guide covers the best insect screens for Melbourne homes.
Victorian & Edwardian Terraces (Carlton, Richmond, Brunswick)
These character homes have tall sash or double‑hung windows. A pleated mosquito screen (also called a pleated screen door for wider openings) is a great choice – it folds like an accordion and slides to the side, preserving the heritage look. For windows, a retractable mosquito screen that rolls up into a top cassette is unobtrusive.
Modern Apartments & Flats (Docklands, South Yarra, St Kilda Road)
Sliding windows and balcony doors need sliding screen doors or folding mosquito screens. A foldable pleated screen (concertina) slides sideways and compresses into a compact stack – perfect for wide openings. Many renters prefer magnetic mosquito screens because they require no drilling.
High‑Wind Areas (Bayside suburbs like Brighton, Sandringham)
Strong winds can blow flimsy screens out of their tracks. A heavy duty mosquito screen with a reinforced aluminium frame and 304 stainless steel mesh is recommended. Aluminum mosquito screens are also very durable and rust‑proof.
Pleated vs Retractable vs Folding
- Pleated mosquito screen – folds horizontally, takes up side space. Excellent for doors.
- Retractable mosquito screen – rolls into a cassette, best for windows.
- Folding mosquito screen (concertina) – like pleated but with larger folds, suitable for wide openings.
- Roll up mosquito screen – same as retractable, often used interchangeably.
Pet‑Friendly & Custom Options
Melbourne pet owners should choose a pet proof mosquito screen using 304 stainless steel mesh. For non‑standard windows, a custom mosquito screen is the only way to get a perfect fit. MBORMC manufactures insect screen doors, mosquito mesh doors, and fly screen doors to your exact dimensions.
